Refinitiv, now LSEG Data & Analytics, is a global provider of financial market data and infrastructure. Originally spun out of Thomson Reuters in 2018 and later acquired by Blackstone, the company serves a wide range of institutional and individual investors.

Refinitiv partnered with Encora to explore a new product opportunity, and I joined as the sole product designer to lead the 0 to 1 design effort.

The Ask

Refinitiv asked Encora to create a fund screener that felt more approachable for investors across experience levels. The team was working against an aggressive timeline, with limited clarity on product definition.

Research & Exploration

Research & Exploration

Given the constraints, I quickly initiated a competitive analysis of existing fund screeners. I evaluated leading tools to understand both their strengths and systemic usability issues.

A clear pattern emerged. Most fund screeners relied on outdated interaction models and assumed a high level of financial literacy, making them difficult to navigate for less experienced users.

After aligning with stakeholders on target users and product goals, I conducted interviews to better understand user behavior, pain points, and expectations.

Three key themes emerged from the research:

  1. Overwhelming complexity
Users struggled with dense interfaces and an excess of filtering options they did not fully understand.

  2. Lack of continuity
Users hesitated to explore because they could not easily save progress, which reduced willingness to engage over time.

  3. Limited discovery pathways
Users wanted to search by known funds and use those as a starting point for exploration, but existing tools did not support this well.

At a fundamental level, users did not know where to begin, lacked confidence in their actions, and found the experience difficult to navigate.

Onboarding

Onboarding

One key gap in the market was the absence of onboarding tailored to novice investors.

I introduced a guided onboarding experience that helps users define initial preferences and narrow down broad criteria. This creates a structured entry point into what is otherwise a complex tool and encourages continued engagement.

At its core, the product remains a powerful screening tool, designed to meet the expectations of more advanced users.

However, the experience extends beyond raw functionality by providing multiple entry points and support systems that make the tool usable from day one.

For users who prefer a known starting point, the screener supports search by fund name or symbol. Selecting a fund automatically populates relevant filters, allowing users to explore similar options with minimal effort.

Recognizing that fund screening is often iterative, I introduced the ability to save filter configurations for future use. This allows users to return to their work without losing progress.

For users who need additional guidance or inspiration, the product also includes community-generated presets, offering real examples of how others approach fund screening.
